World War I
What: The world’s first global conflict, the “Great War”. The introduction of modern technology to warfare resulted in unprecedented carnage and destruction, with more than 9 million soldiers killed by the end of the war in November 1918.
Where: Western Front (France, Belgium, Germany); Eastern Front (Russia and Austria- Hungary); Italian Front ( Italy and Austria); Gallipoli and Middle East (including Egypt)
When: 1914- 1918
Who: Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire against the Allied forces of Great Britain, the United States, France, Russia, Italy and Japan.
Why: The trigger was when Austria's Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serb nationalist on 28th June 1914. Austro-Hungary gained the support of Germany to attack Serbia, while Serbia gained the support of the Russians. Russia also had a treaty with France and Britain. Imperialism and treaties were the log term causes of the war.
